Can cut-outs be incorporated into the glass to accommodate cable trays?

Yes, QbiQ has its own CNC glass processing machine, enabling us to create cut-outs and openings in glass panels in fast any shape.

The profiles of both our single-glazed and double-glazed partitions can be adapted to follow the contours of building elements such as window sills, cable trays, and other obstacles. When a cut-out is required, the opening is precisely machined into the glass panel at our production facility, while the surrounding profiles are custom-fitted on site to ensure a seamless integration around the object or obstruction.

This flexibility allows QbiQ partitions to be incorporated into complex architectural environments without compromising aesthetics, performance or functionality.

Can partitions be adapted to an existing interior?

Our partition can be easily tailored to complement existing interior designs. Because we manufacture our partition walls, doors, and glass panels entirely in-house at our production facility, every system can be customised to meet the specific requirements of your project.

Do all your partitions have the same profile height?

Yes. A defining feature of QbiQ partition walls is their profile, which measures just 33 mm in height when viewed from the front. The floor, wall, and ceiling profiles are identical in appearance from all angles. The use of these minimalist profiles enhances transparency.

Synergy

The 33 mm profile is consistently used across all QbiQ wall systems. This allows different types of QbiQ (glass) walls to be combined seamlessly and with optimal synergy. Where different wall types meet, the connection is minimal. The flat baseboard (not recessed) creates seamless profile connections, which contributes to acoustic performance. Whether it’s a T-joint, corner joint, or frame connection, QbiQ consistently provides the optimal connection between different wall types.

Fire-Resistant Walls

Even our iQ PROTECT Fire Hightech fire-resistant wall features this 33 mm profile height. This ensures that fire-resistant walls are not visible as such and can be easily integrated into the overall interior design.

Do the partitions provide acoustic damping?

All partition wall systems provide a degree of acoustic insulation. However, the level of sound reduction varies depending on the type of partition wall and the door configuration selected.

For example, a double-glazed partition system generally offers higher acoustic performance than a single-glazed system. The type of glass used also plays an important role. Acoustic laminated glass can significantly improve sound insulation compared to standard laminated glass.

The overall acoustic performance of a partition wall system depends on a combination of factors, including the wall construction, glazing specification, door type, seals, and installation details.

QbiQ offers freestanding glazed office units in both single-glazed and double-glazed configurations.

The QbiQ product range includes the QQ1 and QQ2 office units. These are freestanding office spaces with glazed walls that do not extend all the way to the structural ceiling. Each unit is custom-manufactured to project-specific dimensions and can be configured in virtually any size. A single unit may consist of multiple rooms, separated by either glazed or solid partition walls.

Yes, QbiQ offers fall through safe partitions designed to provide fall protection. These systems are specifically developed for installation along atrium edges, mezzanines, and other areas where protection against falls from height is required.

QbiQ’s fall hrough safe systems are part of the iQ PROTECT Safe product range and are available in various configurations. As a standard, iQ PROTECT Safe partition systems are designed as full-height floor-to-ceiling solutions, completely enclosing the space between the floor and ceiling to ensure maximum safety and protection.

Does QbiQ offer partitions with curved glass?

Yes, partition corners do not always have to be straight or set at a 90-degree angle. Curved corners with bent glass are possible in both single-glazed and double-glazed configurations.

Curved glass panels are manufactured on a project-specific basis according to the required height, width, and radius. Virtually any radius can be achieved, with a minimum radius of approximately 800 to 1,000 mm.

This flexibility enables architects and designers to create flowing, organic spaces while maintaining the transparency, performance, and aesthetic quality of the partition system.

How is a double glazed partition constructed?

A double-glazed partition system generally consists of aluminium profiles, glass panels, and an air cavity. This differs from insulating glazing used in façades, where two or more panes of glass are hermetically sealed together with an air or gas-filled cavity to form a single glazing unit.

Module Connections

The various partition modules are connected using a module joint. This can be either a 0-joint (zero joint), where adjacent glass panels are bonded together with a specially developed double-sided glazing tape, or a visible vertical mullion. A vertical mullion may be required when additional structural stability is needed or when a glazed module is connected to a solid wall module.

Typical construction of a double-glazed partition system:

  • Aluminium profiles (1) installed along the floor, ceiling, and adjoining walls.
  • Laminated glass panels (2), which can optionally be specified as acoustic laminated glass. These panels consist of two glass panes bonded together by an interlayer.

In which colours are the partitions available?

To answer this question, it is helpful to divide a partition wall system into three components: profiles, wall panels, and doors. Each component offers its own range of colour and finish options.

Profiles

The aluminium profiles used for floor tracks, ceiling tracks, wall connections, framed doors, and door frames can be finished in virtually any standard RAL colour or custom powder-coated finish.

Powder coating finishes are available in:

  • Matt (approximately 30% gloss)
  • Semi-gloss (approximately 70% gloss)
  • Fine-texture finish for an extra matt and premium appearance

Anodised finishes are also available.

Wall Panels

The available colour options largely depend on the material used for the wall panels.

  • Glass: Naturally transparent and light-transmitting. Glass can also be supplied in a range of colours or fitted with coloured film.
  • Melamine: Available in a wide variety of colours, depending on the manufacturer’s collection.
  • Steel: Can be finished in any RAL colour or custom powder-coated finish, just like the aluminium profiles.

Coloured Glass

The glass itself can be manufactured in a specific colour, or a coloured interlayer can be incorporated during production. In laminated glass, the interlayer between the two glass panes can be produced in a wide range of colours, with options typically selected from the glass manufacturer’s colour palette.

  • Ready for use immediately after installation.
  • The coloured interlayer is protected within the glass and cannot be damaged.

Disadvantages

  • Limited range of colours available.
  • Changes after installation are only possible by replacing the glass panels.

Applied Window Film

An alternative solution is to apply coloured film directly to the glass surface. This film can be installed after the partition walls have been fitted, offering virtually unlimited possibilities in terms of colours, patterns, and custom graphics.

  • Unlimited colour options.
  • Custom graphics and branding can be incorporated.
  • Designs can continue seamlessly across multiple glass panels.
  • The film can be removed, replaced, or updated at a later stage.

  • The film may become damaged over time.

Is the partition placed on the bare concrete floor or on the carpet?

Typically, a (glass) partition wall is installed on top of the floor finish. This offers a number of advantages:

The floor finish can be laid across the entire floor in a single operation. This saves time and, therefore, money.
If the partition needs to be moved in the future, it is usually not necessary to replace the floor covering.
Incidentally, it is also possible to install the partitions directly on the bare floor and then lay the floor covering afterward.

What are the different types of doors for partitions?

In general, there are four types of door units that can be incorporated into partition wall systems:

  • Single doors
  • Double doors
  • Sliding doors
  • Pivot doors

Single Doors

A single door is essentially a conventional hinged door, with hinges on one side and a lock on the other. This is the most commonly used door type in partition wall systems.

By incorporating perimeter seals and an automatic drop seal, the door can be effectively sealed on all sides. As a result, single doors can achieve the highest levels of acoustic performance, particularly when equipped with double rebated frames, additional seals, and drop seals.

This type of door can be fitted with a variety of door leaf options, including:

  • HPL doors (solid or partially glazed)
  • Steel doors (solid)
  • Frameless toughened glass doors
  • Aluminium framed glass doors

The most suitable door option for your project depends on your specific requirements regarding acoustic performance, aesthetics, light transmission, and privacy.

Double Doors

A double door consists of two single door leaves that meet and close in the centre. Double doors are commonly used in circulation areas with high pedestrian traffic or in locations where additional clear opening width is required to allow the passage of goods, equipment, or machinery.

Double doors can be configured either symmetrically or asymmetrically. In an asymmetric configuration, the door set consists of an active leaf and a passive leaf. The wider door leaf is typically the active leaf and is used for everyday access, while the passive leaf remains fixed and is only opened when necessary. This is particularly useful when larger objects need to pass through the opening.

Double doors are generally fitted with an astragal at the centre. This astragal allows the passive door leaf to be secured using an espagnolette locking system, where bolts extend into both the floor and the ceiling to lock the door in place. The passive door leaf is fitted with recesses that accommodate the lock mechanism.

 

Sliding Doors

When there is insufficient space for the swing radius of a conventional hinged door, a sliding door can provide an effective solution. Sliding doors are available in both single and double configurations. They can also be equipped with automatic operation for opening and closing.

  • The wall along which the door slides must remain free of switches, furniture, and other obstructions.
  • More complex hardware and operating mechanisms.
  • Installation space above the opening is required for the track system.

Pivot Doors

A pivot door is characterised by its pivot points being located at the top and bottom of the door, rather than on one vertical side as with a conventional hinged door. The door rotates around a vertical pivot axis positioned approximately 100 to 200 mm from the frame side of the door leaf.

Pivot doors open in both directions, making them particularly suitable for high-traffic circulation areas. The pivot mechanism is designed to hold the door in two positions: fully open or fully closed. When released, a pivot door automatically returns to its closed position.

A key component of the system is the pivot hinge itself. This hinge contains the mechanism that returns the door to the closed position or holds it in the open position. The pivot mechanism can be concealed within a floor spring housing or integrated into the door profile.

Pivot doors can be supplied as either single or double door configurations.

What are the different types of framed doors?

Aluminum-framed doors come in various styles. Although these doors may look the same at first glance, there are several differences.

Acoustic Performance

One of the primary functions of a door is to reduce sound transmission. In most environments, it is undesirable for conversations to be overheard outside the room. The construction of a framed glass door can make a significant difference in acoustic performance.

  • Glass type: A framed glass door can be fitted with tempered, laminated, or acoustic laminated glass. Of these options, acoustic laminated glass provides the highest level of sound insulation.
  • Glass thickness: Glass thickness plays an important role in acoustic performance. In general, the thicker the glass, the better the sound insulation. Glass thicknesses typically range from 8 to 12 mm.
  • Single or double glazing: The use of two (acoustic laminated) glass panes significantly improves acoustic performance. A double-glazed framed door offers considerably better sound insulation than a single-glazed door.
  • Profile design: The shape of the aluminium frame profile influences sound transmission between the door and the frame. A well-designed profile helps minimise sound leakage around the door.
  • Door stop and seals: The seals within the door assembly play a crucial role in sound insulation. They significantly reduce sound transmission through the gaps between the door and frame. These seals are installed in the door stop, where the door and frame meet. A door unit with a double-rebated frame and double seals can achieve even higher acoustic performance.
  • Drop seal: An automatic drop seal prevents sound transmission beneath the door. The use of two or even three drop seals can further improve acoustic performance.

Wall Height

The most aesthetically pleasing framed glass doors are full-height doors that extend from floor to ceiling, eliminating the need for an overhead glazing panel.

The maximum height of a framed glass door is approximately 3,000 mm.

Wall Thickness

The thickness of the door has a significant impact on the overall appearance of the partition system. A full-thickness door, where the door is the same thickness as the partition wall, allows the glass panels in the wall to align seamlessly with the glass in the door.

This creates a completely flush and uniform appearance, with the partition wall and door units forming one continuous surface.

Flush

Flush refers to a surface that is perfectly aligned or level. In the context of flush doors, the glass is positioned on the outside of the door frame profile, rather than being enclosed within it.

Instead of being captured by the frame, the glass panel is bonded directly to the profile using a structural adhesive. This construction allows the glass in the door to align seamlessly with the glass panels of the partition wall.

The result is a completely flush and uniform appearance, where the partition wall and door units form one continuous, uninterrupted surface.

Profile

A framed glass door consists of a rectangular frame, typically constructed from aluminium profiles. In a glass framed door, these profiles remain largely visible, making the width and finish of the profile key elements in the overall appearance of the door.

In most cases, slim and elegant profiles are preferred for their clean, contemporary aesthetic and their ability to maximise transparency.

Colour

The aluminium profiles of both the door and frame can be powder-coated in any desired RAL colour. Anodised finishes are also available.

Although it is common practice to apply the same finish to both the door and frame profiles, it is equally possible to create a contrasting design by specifying a different colour for the door. This allows the door to stand out visually from the surrounding frame or partition wall, creating a distinctive architectural feature.

What does a glass partition cost?

The cost of a glass partition system mainly depends on the type of glass, panel dimensions, wall height, and the required acoustic performance.

Type of Glass

The type of glass used depends on the desired panel height and acoustic requirements.

  • To ensure the stability of the partition, thicker glass must be used for higher wall constructions.
  • The acoustic performance of glass partitions is determined by both the thickness and the type of glass. Acoustic laminated glass, for example, includes a special interlayer that significantly improves sound insulation.

Panel Dimensions

Panel dimensions refer to the width of the individual glass panels. Smaller panel widths require more panels, more panel connections, and additional installation work, which increases costs.

Height

Higher partitions require more material and therefore increase the overall cost. The required glass thickness is determined by the height of the glass panels. In general, taller panels require thicker glass to maintain strength and stability.

What is a drop seal?

A drop seal is a rubber seal located at the bottom of a door. The rubber strip drops down when the door closes. A pressure pin on the hinge side of the door ensures that the rubber seal is pressed against the floor when the door closes.

The drop seal is an acoustic solution designed to reduce or even completely prevent sound transmission under the door.

Any Type of Door
Drop seals can be used with virtually any type of door. They can be integrated into framed doors, HPL doors, and steel doors. For tempered glass doors, the drop seal is mounted beneath the door using an aluminum profile.

Double threshold
When very high standards are required for the acoustic properties of the door unit, you can opt for two or three thresholds. This reduces sound transmission under the door to virtually zero.

Level Floor
A threshold can only function properly if the floor to which the rubber seal must adhere is straight and level. A bumpy or sloped floor has a negative effect on the intended sound insulation provided by the threshold. Using a stainless steel dust threshold can offer a solution in such cases.

What is a framed door?

A framed door is a rectangular frame with a glass panel set within it.

In partition walls, framed doors are typically constructed with an aluminum frame fitted with an acoustically laminated glass panel.

What is a meeting stile?

A set of double doors can be equipped with a door bolt. The term “door bolt” refers to the mechanism between the two doors.

Passive door
A double door typically consists of an active door and a passive door. The “fixed door,” which is used in areas with heavy traffic or for the passage of large items, is the passive door.

The door hinge connects the passive and active doors. The passive door can be locked with an espagnolette. At the bottom and top of the passive door, pins extend from the door that fit into recesses in the floor and the top of the door frame.

What is a partition?

Using a lever or two sliders, pins extend from the top and bottom of the door. These pins fit into recesses in the floor or the top of the door frame (or ceiling), thereby locking the door in place.

What is the difference between EW and EI fireproof classifications?

An EI classification, on the other hand, provides both integrity and thermal insulation. This means the partition system prevents the passage of flames and significantly limits the transfer of heat.

The numbers 30 and 60 indicate the number of minutes for which the partition system maintains its fire-resistant performance. For example, an EW60-certified partition system prevents the passage of flames and hot gases for up to 60 minutes.

What is the difference between tempered and laminated glass?

Tempered Glass
This type of glass is tempered, making it difficult to break. If it does break, it shatters into thousands of tiny pieces—like a car’s side window or the windows of a bus shelter. Tempered glass is first cut to size and then tempered in a furnace at a temperature of 600°C to 700°C.

Advantages of tempered glass

  • Cheaper than laminated glass.
  • Significantly stronger than float glass.

Disadvantages of tempered glass

  • Lower sound insulation rating. (Rw 32 dB)
  • Cannot be processed after tempering.
  • If broken, the pane shatters into thousands of pieces.

 

Laminated or layered glass

Laminated glass, also known as layered glass, consists of two panes of float glass with a transparent film between them. This film ensures that when the glass breaks, no dangerous loose shards are created. The glass shards remain adhered to the film. Although the pane breaks, it remains a single unit.

In addition to standard laminated glass, there is also acoustic laminated glass. In this type of glass, the film between the two panes is manufactured in such a way that it blocks more sound. Partition walls with this type of glass are often used in offices and in areas where sound transmission between rooms is undesirable.

Advantages of laminated glass

  • High sound insulation values/acoustic properties. (Rw 36 dB)
  • Remains intact when broken. No hole is created.
  • No shards that can cause injury.

What type of glass is used in a partition?

Tempered, laminated, and acoustic laminated glass are all used for the system walls.

Floor-to-ceiling glass system walls must be made of at least tempered glass or laminated safety glass in accordance with NEN 3569 / NEN-EN 12600.

Laminated glass (e.g., 33.2 or 44.2): When broken, it remains adhered to the interlayer, preventing a hole from forming and ensuring no sharp shards fall (prevents both injury and falling through the glass).
Tempered glass: When broken, it shatters into thousands of small, blunt granules.
Finally, acoustic laminated glass is often used in partition walls. This glass has the same safety properties as standard laminated glass. The difference is that the acoustic film between the two glass panes allows less sound to pass through.

The acoustic properties of the three types are as follows: tempered glass has a laboratory-measured Rw value of 32 dB. Laminated glass has an acoustic value of 36 dB, and acoustic laminated glass has a value of 40 dB. These values apply to a glass thickness of 12 mm.

Which acoustic values are needed between an office and a corridor?

The primary purpose of a partitions is to create a comfortable and productive working environment with minimal noise disturbance.

In general, lower acoustic requirements are applied to partition systems that separate an office from a circulation area, such as a corridor, than to partitions between two offices. This is based on the assumption that no confidential or sensitive conversations are taking place in the corridor that could disturb individuals working in the office.

For a partition system separating an office from a circulation area, the following acoustic performance guidelines can be used:

  • Rw 40 dB → Conversations are audible and partly intelligible.
  • Rw 45 dB → Conversations are audible but not intelligible.
  • Rw 52 dB → Normal conversations are not audible.

Which acoustic values are needed between two offices?

This question cannot be answered with a single dB value. First, it is important to determine what level of sound insulation is considered acceptable for a specific situation. Consider the following example:

There is a conversation taking place in one office. What should or should not be audible in the neighbouring office?

  • You can hear the conversation and understand what is being said.
  • You can hear that a conversation is taking place, but you cannot understand it.
  • You cannot hear the conversation at all.

Secondly, within the partition systems industry, three different acoustic rating methods are commonly used. These values are often confused or used interchangeably, sometimes unintentionally and sometimes in a misleading way. Below, we explain the differences.

Glass Performance Ratings

Every glass panel has a specific acoustic rating, which refers solely to the sound insulation performance of the glass itself. This value is fixed and remains the same for a particular type of glass. For example, 12 mm acoustic laminated glass has a sound insulation value of 40 dB.

However, this rating applies only to the glass panel. It does not take into account the complete partition construction, including profiles, door units, wall connections, or module joints.

Laboratory Ratings

A more realistic measurement is the laboratory rating. In this test, a complete partition system is assembled in a controlled environment and tested for its acoustic performance.

The resulting value is the only reliable basis for comparing different partition systems, as it evaluates the performance of the entire assembly rather than a single component.

On-Site Performance Ratings

To determine the actual acoustic performance of a partition system in practice, an on-site test must be carried out. During this type of test, the partition is installed in a real-life environment and measured under actual building conditions.

It is important to understand that this measurement reflects not only the performance of the partition itself but also that of the surrounding construction. Factors such as the quality of the plenum barrier above a suspended ceiling can have a significant impact on the results. If the barrier is poorly constructed or missing altogether, sound can easily travel through the ceiling void into adjacent spaces.

Similarly, when a partition is installed on a raised access floor or timber floor, sound transmission beneath the wall may occur. Wall finishes and ceiling materials within the test area can also influence the measured acoustic performance.

In other words, an on-site test evaluates both the partition system and its environment.
